Carthaginian Empire; AR 1/4 shekel (hemidrachm); circa 215-205 BC.

Obv. Head of Tanit to the left, wearing a wreath of grain ears.

Rv. Horse standing to the right.

Silver, 1.79 g, 14.0 mm, 12h. SNG COP 336-339; HNI 2015; see Robinson 1964, pl. V, 10-13 i 16.

Grade: XF, rare and very well preserved coin.

It is believed that coins of this type were minted both in Carthage, Zeugitana, and in unidentified mints in southern Italy (Capua? Tarentum? Locri?) during Hannibal's army presence in that region during the Second Punic War. Due to the style, distinct from Italian and Sicilian finds, it is assumed that the place of minting for the offered coin was Carthage.
