Struck three times, there are traces of the earlier reverse cross from Neapolitan gigliato. Rev. +OSP/XE/AL·S·IOhIS·I/ERCI/T◦RODI·:; cross with pairs of fleurons and Norman shields with crosses on its ends. Struck three times; faint traces of the enthroned monarch holding sceptre. Silver, 3.57 g, 28.0 mm. Schlumberger 26; Metcalf 1206-7 (second variety, i.e. with the pine cone). Near Very Fine. A correct legend should read: F ROGIERIVS D PINIBVS D GR M and OSPITAL S IOhIS IRLNI ꝮT RODI. Remnants of the legend hOnOR REGIS IUDICIU DILIGIT — ROBERTUS DEI GRA IER ET SICI REX are visible under them. Under the Neapolitan die impression, there was one more which remains illegible but the letters ON on the obverse. |
