Obv. DNMARCIA – NVSPFAVC; bust of the emperor facing, head ¾ to the right, wearing a diademate helmet with a plume, and armour; in the right hand, a spear placed behind the neck, the left arm covered with a shield with St. George slaying the dragon.

Rev. VICTORI – A AVCCCЄ; Victoria in full figure stands to the left holding a long cross in her right, outstretched hand; in the right field, an eight-pointed star; CONOB in ex. Traces of the restrike over another solidus.

Gold, 3.94 g, 21.5 mm. RIC 510. Extremely Fine, lustre on both faces, in Obv. field, an ancient graffiti ‘II’, small flan flaw; full visible figures.

Marcian, a distinguished general from Thrace or Illyria, was chosen as the successor of Theodosius II by the late emperor's sister, Pulcheria, and other generals. He fought the Huns, stopped money donations to the people of the capital, reduced taxes and funded numerous public buildings.
