Marcian, a distinguished general from Thrace or
Illyria, was chosen as the successor of Theodosius II by the late emperor's
sister, Pulcheria, and other generals. He fought the Huns, stopped money donations
to the people of the capital, reduced taxes and funded numerous public
buildings.
