The large-format painting "Jesus on the Mount of Olives" shows a biblical event that is described in the Gospel of Luke. After the last supper, Jesus and his disciples Peter, James and John go to the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives. Filled with fear, he seeks the support of God the Father in prayer when an angel appears and gives him strength. The Gospels of Mark and Matthew mention the sleeping disciples whom Jesus finds after his prayer. The touching scene takes place in front of the imposing backdrop of the Salzburg Untersberg with the church of St. Leonhard. The coarse body shapes, the dark tones and the sensitive faces of the figures increase the viewer's empathy. This extraordinary representation of the New Objectivity brings the human nature of Jesus into focus.
