Obv. + ΚЄ ΒΟ — [ΤΑΝΚRΙ+]; a bearded bust of Tancred facing, bareheaded, wearing chain armour and holding a raised sword; above, four pellets crosswise.
Rev. a cross and two branches below (the Holy Cross as the Tree of Life); in angles, ΙC-ΧC / ΝΙ-ΚΑ.
Copper, 3.53 g, 21.2 mm. Schlumberger 2:7; Rheinheimer 4; Metcalf 63-70. Grade III. Nice old patina.
Tancred is usually thought to be wearing a turban
on this coin, but the best struck and preserved examples prove that this is
merely a way of combing his hair.
